CFRC has a longstanding research interest in research on all aspects of urban density, social and economic restructuring and urban renewal. Our urban renewal interests span research on public housing estates renewal, the process of “incremental” suburban renewal through the individual replacement of suburban housing, as well as larger urban renewal programs. We are particularly interested in the outcomes of these renewal processes on the ground as well as the processes and institutional arrangements through which urban renewal is delivered and managed in the contemporary city. The City Shaping portfolio also includes our world leading work in higher density housing and our longstanding interests in urban socio-spatial polarisation and change, together with their implications for city planning and development. This research links to new policy concerns that are at the forefront on debates on how contemporary cities are restructuring spatially into new configurations of social and economic activity. These reflect global trends and we aim to position CFRC in the forefront of research in this area.
Our research is closely linked to a number of courses within UNSW Built Environment at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The following courses are taught by City Shaping staff who leverage considerable research experience into delivering to students the most up to date knowledge relevant to today’s changing urban landscape.
