The creation of child friendly cities has been encouraged by UNESCO and increasingly taken up by local authorities in Australia. In 2004, the Year of the Built Environment, a two day " Creating Child Friendly Cities " symposium was held in Brisbane, jointly organised by Griffith University's Urban Research Program and the Delfin Lend Lease group. Many other Australian events have been organised around this theme in recent years.
Following on from the success of the 2004 Symposium, a two day Child Friendly Cities Conference in Sydney on 30-31 October 2006 at NSW Parliament House was hosted in collaboration with the ARACY and Griffith University's Urban Research Program.
