The research partner relationship between BE and GWA Kitchens & Bathrooms has developed to include participation and support for a project in the Ergonomics (IDES2201) course, course convened by lecturer Stephen Ward in the Bachelor of Industrial Design program.
For the second consecutive year, an inclusive design project – to design a small bathroom to meet the “changing needs of a multi-generational household which, over time, could include infants, children, parents and elderly grandparents”. Students worked in nine different groups, each group designing a complete bathroom over 7 weeks. A few weeks into the project the students groups were asked to build and evaluate a full size cardboard mock-up of their design in the studio/prac time.
GWA supported this project with input from staff industrial designer, David Giorgio, supply of materials for the full size mock-ups and with a prize of $1000 offered to the team with the best final design. The projects were judged by GWA and UNSW staff.
The 2012 prize for was presented this week to the winning student team by Steve Cummings and David Giorgio of GWA. Steve is a partner in the successful ARC Linkage Project “Liveable bathrooms for older people: designing out dependence in activities of daily living.” A Project lead by Dr Catherine Bridge (City Futures Research Centre)

The first three, as listed, were able to attend in the mid-year recess to receive the prize on behalf of the team.
The presentation took place in the Dean’s conference room and the group enjoyed a morning tea together. Congratulations to the students and thank you to everyone who supported them.
