Matthew is as a data scientist and fellow in urban analytics at the City Futures Research Centre. His interests lie in understanding the dynamics of urban structures based on their underlying transport, demographic, and economic networks; their linkages in ongoing processes of decay, renewal, and gentrification; and, the role of urban big data and analytics in substantiating development policies to facilitate or intervene in these processes. He holds a PhD from UCL Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, an MSc in International Planning from UCL Bartlett, and a BSc (Hons) in Biology from the University of Manchester.

He was a part of the award-winning Value Australia project, which employed advanced research methodologies and state-of-the-art analytics, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, to create secure digital valuation models for various land and property types throughout Australia. Additionally, Matthew serves as the Regional Lead in Asia Pacific in the Colouring Cities Research Programme, based at the Alan Turing Institute in London. This program aims to democratise urban data and facilitate the generation and collection of new data through citizen science initiatives and collaborations with official data custodians.

Matthew is open to supervising research students whose interests align with his areas of expertise.
